Here’s a video message and some thoughts for discussion from Exodus 35 on how church can work together.
Read Exodus 35 and consider these ideas in your home groups and homes.
Ask yourselves these questions:
What can I offer?
How can I encourage others in what they can offer?
Here are some of the things Louise and I do that you could do while we’re away. These are things you could offer and help with to build and strengthen the church.
Being there early – I know this is a perennial joke but it’s a serious need!
- Visitors often arrive early and need to be greeted.
- Music things need to be set up.
- We also pray for the service at 10am
Welcome – Not just greeting people at the door but keeping an eye out for anyone who is new or unsure and making sure they aren’t left alone during our gathering.
Worship – If you play an instrument, now would be a good time to let us know! We could spend some time learning songs leading up to the summer.
Children’s Church – As well as Louise being away it’s quite likely that the others who teach the children will have extra things they’ll be doing while we’re away. So extra help with our amazing children’s ministry would be helpful.
fEAsT – Overseeing the smooth running of fEAsT meals and organising someone to give a testimony.
Day to Day:
The King’s Centre admin
- Dealing with bookings and hall enquiries
- Dealing with post, phone messages and emails.
- On call help for centre – if a hall user needs help eg they can’t get the kitchen shutter work etc.
- Opening up for outside users – NA, Hartbeeps, cleaner etc
- Computer suite – keep it ticking over (running updates on computers, printer ink etc.)
- Putting things away in centre – keeping the place tidy.
Diaries – keeping the church and centre diaries up to date
Facebook and Twitter feeds – posting updates
Uploading sermons – editing the audio each Sunday and uploading it to the church website
Pastoral care – Generally looking after one another!
Prayer walking – praying for the local area each week
Mid week meetings – leading and organising
Job Club – I’m one of four regular volunteers at Job Club. On most weeks we’d cope with just 3 of us but if another volunteer has a week off then it makes things a bit tricky.
Javed – Javed comes in at least once a week for a cup of tea, chat and prayer. You won’t be able to replicate the relationship I have with Javed but one or two people could start developing a relationship with him now and maybe visit him at his home every week or so while I’m away.
Admin – Coordinating and organising all the above.
There are probably many other things that I’ll add to the list as I go along the way and you can always offer things that aren’t on the list!
Let’s pray together that this coming season will be a time of growth for the whole church as we offer ourselves.
